Zelensky: Russian murderers now threatening our NPPs, while world just keeps on waiting
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has not yet received a response to his call to allow UN peacekeepers to guard Ukrainian nuclear power plants, while Russian forces may break into Zaporizhia and Chernobyl nuclear power plants at any moment.
Zelensky addressed the issue in an interview with ABC News, Ukrinform reports.
"We offered that they give us peacekeepers, and I asked for support for the initiative to have UN peacekeepers protect all these nuclear power plants because it is about the security of the whole Europe and the world. Meanwhile, technical staff and experts will be working inside. To date, my request has not been returned yet," Zelensky said.
The president added that delaying the response to such a significant issue could cost dearly.
"There are terrorists at the Chernobyl NPP, driving tanks and wielding knives, and trust me, these people are no nuclear scientists or physicists, I'm not even sure if they have any education at all," he said.
He said that Ukrainians working at the nuclear power plants would protect the facilities "until the last moment" because "it is impossible to let inside a nuclear power plant people wielding rifles, who don’t even understand how everything works there."
The president believes global community needs to undertake immediate steps to protect Ukrainian nuclear facilities.
"The whole world can wait and deliberate for another week, two, or three, until our people die there and these invaders get inside. I think that everyone still has time until that day –Judgment Day," Zelensky summed up.
As reported, the site of the Zaporizhia NPP was seized by Russian military forces. Overnight Friday, a fire broke out at the NPP as a result of enemy shelling. The enemy destroyed the personnel training building.
At the same time, Slavutych Mayor Yuri Fomichev said there is currently no safe corridor to ensure a shift change at the Chernobyl NPP as the site has been seized by Russian forces on 17:00 on February 24, 2022.
