United States announces ban on Russian oil and gas imports
The United States is banning Russian oil and gas imports to the U.S. market.
U.S. President Joe Biden said this in his address from the White House on Tuesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“Today I am announcing the United States is targeting the main artery of Russia's economy. We're banning all imports of Russian oil and gas and energy," Biden said in remarks on further measures to bring Russia to justice for its unprovoked and unjustified war in Ukraine.
He specified that Russian oil will no longer be acceptable at U.S. ports and the American people will “deal another powerful blow to Putin's war machine."
Biden stressed that despite the negative consequences for the American economy itself, this decision was made with strong bipartisan support from the U.S. Congress and the country as a whole, as America will not stand aside and will continue to support Ukraine.
In addition, he said, the U.S. decision was discussed with allies and partners, particularly in Europe.
On February 24, Russia declared war on Ukraine and launched a large-scale invasion.
