SBU prevents terrorist attack in Zaporizhia

The Security Service of Ukraine has thwarted a terrorist attack in Zaporizhia and detained its perpetrator.

That’s according to the security agency’s press service, Ukrinform reports.

The malefactor, 56, is a resident of Dnipro, whose aim was to sow chaos and panic in Zaporizhia by setting off a bomb at a crowded location in the city center.

The man planned to use a custom-made explosive device, disguising it as a crutch. The man installed a pyrocartridge and an explosive in its cavity, and to enhance the damage effect, he filled the explosive with nails and bolts.

Two days before the intended date of the attack, the culprit arrived in Zaporizhia from one of Ukraine’s western regions.

The SBU managed to expose the man's criminal intentions and prevent the crime. The attacker was detained in a hideout. The explosive device was neutralized.

The inquiry is underway as the culprit is being interrogated.

A version of the involvement of Russian intelligence in the violent plot is being worked out.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, in April, special services detained a Zaporizhia man who had been passing intelligence on the region's defense forces to his Moscow handlers.
