Zelensky, Biden discuss developments at nuclear plant seized by Russia
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has discussed with the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, the situation at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, as well as the risks it is bearing.
The head of state spoke of this in a video address to the nation, Ukrinform reports.
"Of course, we are doing everything so that the world is aware of every detail of the situation at the Zaporizhia NPP. And, in particular, today I talked about it in detail with the President of the United States of America, Biden. I am grateful to him for his understanding and full support of the need to return proper control of the NPP back to Ukraine and immediately ensure access of the IAEA," said Zelensky.
In his opinion, this can be done in a matter of days, before the invaders bring the situation to a point of no return.
"And it's easier to do it now than later, if winds start to spread radiation pollution across Europe," the head of state added.
In general, Zelensky said, his conversation with Biden was very constructive, positive, quite long, and productive.
"We managed to discuss all issues that are of vital importance for the protection of Ukraine and freedom. I thanked Mr. President and all the people of the United States for the defense assistance and tangible leadership in macro-financial support to our state. Just yesterday, President Biden approved a $6 billion package: three on defense aid and three on financial aid through the World Bank system,” said Zelensky
“And I especially appreciated the inclusion of air defense in this package. We can really make sure that Russian missile terror will be overcome when Ukraine receives NASAMS anti-aircraft systems," the head of state said.
He also recalled that earlier on Thursday, he held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, who arrived on a visit to Ukraine. The President thanked the Italian people, the President of Italy and personally the Prime Minister of Italy, Mario Draghi, for their principled position in defending a united Europe.
The parties discussed expanding cooperation between the two states and Italy's experience in strengthening security, in particular energy security.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, President Zelensky had a phone call with the President of the United States of America, Joseph Biden, on the evening of August 25.
