Zaporizhzhia NPP’s fifth power unit shut down due to Russian shelling

In the occupied city of Enerhodar, the fifth power unit has been shut down at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant because of nearby Russian shelling this morning.

Ukraine's National Nuclear Energy Generating Company Energoatom said this on Telegram, according to Ukrinform.

"Today, September 1, 2022, at 04:57, as a result of another mortar shelling by the Russian occupying forces at the site of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, the emergency protection was activated and the operating fifth power unit was shut down," Energoatom said.

The company noted that this is the second time in the last 10 days that “the criminal actions of the rashists have led to the shutdown of the unit”.

The Ukrainian staff of the nuclear power plant is doing everything possible to eliminate damage to its infrastructure, Energoatom emphasized.

As Ukrinform reported, the Russian forces shelled the pre-agreed route of the IAEA mission to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant this morning.
