Spain plans to send six Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine – Defense Minister

Madrid plans to send six Leopard 2 A4 main battle tanks to the Ukrainian Army.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles told lawmakers about the move on Wednesday, Ukrinform reports with reference to The Guardian.

According to the minister, this number may increase over time.

Last month, Robles said Spain was open to sending German-made Leopard 2 tanks and would act in coordination with its Western allies after Germany agrees to the effort.

According to Felix Arteaga, a security and defense researcher at the Elcano think tank, Spain has 108 2A4 tanks in service. This is an old standard model for many European nations, and Ukrainian tankers can undergo standard training on these vehicles.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, at the end of 2022, Spain delivered the largest package of defense materiel for Ukraine, delivering including heavy weapons, long-range munitions, and anti-tank ammunition to a logistics center in Poland.
