General Staff: Problem of mine safety in Ukraine will keep growing

Reducing the cost and increasing the safety of demining are the priorities of military innovations in a situation with an extraordinary level of contamination of the territory of Ukraine with explosive objects.

Colonel Volodymyr Kotsiuruba, a representative of the Central Military-Scientific Department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said this during a briefing at the Military Media Center, Ukrinform reports.

At a briefing on the mechanism for evaluation and implementation of inventions and innovations used in the security and defense sector, he said that demining tools are a promising area of development and the need for them is growing day by day.

"This is due to the fact that the problem of mine safety in Ukraine will keep growing," Kotsiuruba noted.

According to experts, Ukraine is one of the five countries most contaminated with explosive objects. The territory of contamination is approximately 82,500 square kilometers.

Therefore, according to Colonel Kotsiuruba, reducing the cost and increasing the safety of the processes are among the directions that foresee innovations in the issue of mine clearance.

As reported, since the beginning of the Russian large-scale invasion of Ukraine, more than 354,000 explosive objects and about 3,000 kg of explosives, including 2,218 aerial bombs, have been defused. The area of about 88,000 hectares has been inspected.
