Russian subversive group attempting to penetrate into Sumy region 2.5 months ago “destroyed” - General Nayev

A Russian sabotage and reconnaissance group tried to penetrate the territory of Ukraine’s Sumy region in the country’s northeast about two and a half months ago. It was completely destroyed by Ukraine’s Defense Forces.

That’s according to the Commander of Ukraine’s Joint Forces, Lieutenant General Serhiy Nayev, who gave Ukrinform an exclusive comment.

"A sabotage and reconnaissance group tried to pass from Russia into Sumy region about 2.5 months ago. That group was destroyed," he said.

The commander emphasized that counter-sabotage measures to eliminate the enemy group were carried out with the assistance of the Security Service. In addition, according to the general, the Armed Forces and units of the National Police were assigned appropriate tasks in order to counter enemy sabotage and intelligence groups.

"With the measures already taken, we have improved the security situation regarding saboteurs from the Russian Federation in Sumy region," Nayev emphasized.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, in January 2023, a Russian sabotage and recon group tried to covertly cross the border in Sumy region.

Sumy region in the northeastern part of Ukraine has been subjected to constant cross-border shelling and air strikes by Russian forces. However, no active combat engagements have been observed in the area for months.
