State Department reacts to reports of potential assassination attempt on Zelensky

The United States supports Ukraine's efforts to bring to justice those involved in wartime assassination attempts on Ukraine's top leadership and engaged in espionage for Russia.

According to an Ukrinform correspondent, U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller said this at a briefing on Tuesday, commenting on reports that an assassination attempt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been thwarted.

"Obviously, we've seen Russian espionage and Russian intelligence activities in Ukraine for some time," he said.

Miller noted that Washington had seen reports of a potential assassination attempt on President Zelensky, however, he added, it is within the competence of the Ukrainian side to comment on the details.

"We fully support Ukraine's general efforts to hold people accountable for those activities," Miller added.

On August 7, Ukraine's SBU State Security Service reported the detention of a Russian female spy in the Mykolaiv region who was gathering intelligence on the president's schedule and locations that he had to visit in this region. In addition, she tried to identify the locations of electronic warfare systems and ammunition depots of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Ochakiv area.
