Explaining complex things in simple words: Russian offensive in Kharkiv region, Su-57 destruction, European parliament elections results

The Center for Strategic Communication and Information Security pursues efforts to provide a brief explanation to foreign audiences on the current topics of particular interest as regards Ukraine.

RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE IN KHARKIV REGION

The Russian offensive in the north of the Kharkiv region did not achieve the results expected by the Kremlin. The invaders are beginning to lose their advantage.

The "window of opportunity" for a Russian breakthrough closed after the resumption of Western military aid to Ukraine.

The defence forces took advantage of the permission to attack the Russian rear in the Belgorod region with Western weapons, thereby nullifying the Russian offensive advantages in the border regions.

The Kremlin's strategy of exhausting the Ukrainian forces is expensive and

The rate of mobilization in Russia can solve the issue of compensation for high losses, but not the creation of new striking groups for large-scale offensives in several directions at the same time.

SU-57 DESTRUCTION

On June 8, a Russian multirole fighter Su-57 was hit at the Akhtubinsk airfield in the Astrakhan region.

Russian aviation is one of the main problems for the Defence Forces and a threat to the civilian population of Ukraine.

Su-57 is Russia's latest modern combat aircraft and a carrier of Kh-59 and Kh-69 missiles, anti-aircraft missiles, and other weapons. According to the Russian side, it belongs to the 5th generation of fighters.

It was the X-69 missile that attacked the Trypilska TPP on April 11. There is a dangerous weapon used for terror against Ukrainians.

The destruction of an enemy aircraft at a distance of almost 600 km is a significant victory for the Ukrainian Defence Forces and the first combat loss of the Su-57 in the Russian army.

The Russian Armed Forces have only a few Su-57s in service. The fighter costs tens of millions of dollars, and its production is complicated by sanctions.

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT ELECTIONS RESULTS

On June 9, the elections to the European Parliament ended, and preliminary voting results are known.

The majority in the parliament was retained by the European People's Party (EPP), which supports Ukraine in its European integration course and the fight against Russian aggression.

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EPP in the new parliament will build a broad majority with pro-European and pro-Ukrainian forces for a strong Europe.

Positive trends in public attitudes towards Ukraine were also manifested during the voting in Slovakia and Hungary.

The elections also witnessed the growth of the far-right forces influence, in particular in France, Austria, and Germany. This is a predictable and alarming result for Ukraine, since it is precisely on them that the Kremlin is betting.

At the same time, radical right forces have their agenda, which does not coincide with Putin's. In addition, there are contradictions between these forces, which prevent them from consolidating in the European Parliament.
