HOSTILITIES

754 combat encounters took place at the front line over the week from June 10 to 16, according to the General Staff.

Overnight on June 12, Ukrainian forces launched missile strikes at the Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missile battery deployed at Belbek airbase as well as two S-400 anti-aircraft missile batteries at Belbek airbase and in periphery of Sevastopol, Crimea. One S-300 radar and an S-400 radar had been destroyed in aftermath of the attacks.

In the Sea of Azov Taganrog Bay, the Russian tugboat "Engineer Smirnov" and the barge "Section-179" came under Ukrainian drone attack overnight on June 8.

On June 10, Ukrainian forces launched effective strikes on Russia’s S-400 anti-aircraft missile battery in periphery of Dzhankoy, Crimea, as well as two hostile S-300 anti-aircraft missile batteries in periphery of Chornomorske and in Yevpatoria, Crimea. In aftermath of the strikes, S-300/S-400 radars had been put out of commission, and there was a detonation of ammunition at all three attack sites.

On June 13, Ukrainian special operations forces struck Russia’s newest communications system, the R-416GМ, the first such system to have been defeated over the two years of war.

On the southern stretch of the front line, Russian forces had lost five boats over the day of June 13.

A certain number of the F-16 jet fighters to be transferred by partners to Ukraine will be based at secure air bases outside of Ukraine.

Front line situation

June 10

On Kharkiv axis, Russian forces undertook four unsuccessful attempts to advance into the areas of Vovchansk and Hlyboke.

On Kupyansk axis, the enemy unsuccessfully attempted to push our units out of their positions in the areas of Synkivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Pishchane, and Berestov settlements.

On Pokrovsk axis, Russian invaders are maintaining a high intensity of assault operations, seeking tactical gains in the areas of Novooleksandrivka, Yevgenivka, Sokil, Novopokrovsky, Karlivka, and Yasnobrodivka.

A Sukhoi Su-25 jet fighter was taken out of the sky by Ukrainian air defense units.

June 11

On the eastern stretch of the front line, Ukrainian forces struck and destroyed Russia’s rare 240mm self-propelled heavy mortar "Tyulpan" and a multifunctional electronic warfare system "Borisoglebsk-2".

On Kharkiv and Kupiansk axes, Russian invaders made a new attempt to storm Ukrainian lines, but never succeeded.

On Lyman axis, Russian forces intensified their activity, supported with glide bomb attacks on the areas of ​​Siversk, Nevske, and Druzhelyubivka.

June 12

On Kharkiv axis, the Russian invaders unsuccessfully attempted to advance deeper into Ukrainian battle formations.

On Kupiansk axis, Russian invaders increased the number and intensity of assaults, with six such assaults reported to have been fought back by Ukrainian defenders.

June 13

On Kurakhove axis, the enemy was seeking to breach out through Ukrainian lines in the areas of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, and Paraskoviivka.

On Kharkiv axis, the Russian military made two unsuccessful attempts to storm Ukrainian lines in the vicinity of Hlyboke and Tykhe settlements.

The enemy has got bogged down in the town of Vovchansk stretch of the front line, despite engaging additional personnel and equipment redeployed from other front line areas. On Pokrovsk axis, Ukrainian defenders wiped out a company-size adversary tank unit.

June 14

On Pokrovsk axis, the Russian invaders increased the intensity of assault operations.

On Kramatorsk axis, the enemy undertook two attempts to advance closer to the settlements of Bohdanivka and Andriivka. Both were effectively repelled.

15.06

On Kharkiv axis, the invading forces increased the quantity and intensity of their attacks.

On the Kupyansk stretch of the front line, the enemy continued with assault on approaches to the settlements of Petropavlivske, Andriyivka, Hrekivka, and Nevske.

The Russian invaders were pushed out of their positions in Serebryansky Forest, Luhansk Region.

The invading forces are aggressively storming Ukrainian lines on the Pokrovsk stretch of the front line; combat engagements are continuing on approaches to the villages of Novooleksandrivka, Kalinove, Sokil, and Novoselivka Persha.

June 16

On Kharkiv axis, the invading forces made a series of assaults on Ukrainian lines in the area of Vovchansk town. All were fought off by Ukrainian defenders.

On Pokrovsk axis, the invading forces are pursuing to breach out through Ukrainian defenses on approaches to the villages of Novooleksandrivka, Yevhenivka, Sokil, and Umanske.

Colonel Vadym Sukharevsky, deputy commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, was appointed the commander of the newly-established Unmanned Systems Forces within the Ukrainian Armed Forces on June 10, in pursuance of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine directive issued earlier that day. Ukraine has become the first in the world to create a new branch of the Armed Forces – the Unmanned Systems Forces.

Dmytro Pletenchuk, chief of the strategic communications center of Ukraine’s South Defense Forces announced his reappointment as spokesman for the Armed Forces Naval Force.

WAR: LOSSES AND AFTERMATH

Russia’s combat losses in the war in Ukraine over the period from June 10 to 16, 2024 had totaled:

Russia’s toll of combat casualties from the battle of Kharkiv had amounted to 4,000 personnel over the period from June 10 to 16.

The "Wagner" private army, founded by Yevgeny Prigozhin, recruited for the war in Ukraine at least 48,366 inmates of Russian prison camps, of whom more than a third had been eliminated in the battle of  Bakhmut.

On June 12, Russia’s National Day, the Defense Ministry’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) launched a cyber attack on Russian state authorities, as well as Russian airports, resulting in flight delays and disruptions.

The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces has confirmed it had struck the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in Russia's Rostov Oblast on June 5, claiming the attack destroyed 1.5 million tons of oil and oil products worth $540 million.

UKRAINE: WAR LOSSES AND AFTERMATH

The Russian invading forces had carried out 21,000 shelling attacks and 431 airstrikes on Ukraine over the week under review.

Russian shelling attacks on the Donetsk, Kherson, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kharkiv regions had left 9 people dead and 53 injured.

Missile and drone attacks

June 12

Ukrainian air defense units had shot down one Kh-47M2 "Kinzhal" aeroballistic missile, four Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles and 24 Shahed-131/136 strike drones. One Iskander-M ballistic missile failed to be shot down.

As a result of Russian attacks on Kyiv Oblast, a civilian man was injured by falling debris; several facilities in two separate locations were damaged; a fire broke out at one of the industrial facilities, which took three days to extinguish.

In Dnipropetrovsk region, a family with a child sustained injuries; nine buildings were damaged.

Russian forces struck an energy infrastructure facility in Sumy region, leaving 14 localities without electricity supply.

June 14

Ukrainian air defense units downed 7 out of 14 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles and all of 17 Shahed-131/136 strike drones launched by Russian army at Ukraine.

An infrastructure facility in Khmelnytskyi region was set on fire in aftermath of a Russian attack.

Russian invading forces struck the city of Kryvyi Rih, Dnipropetrovsk region, with missiles targeting residential quarters, leaving 9 people dead and 29 injured, including 5 children.

Mykola Kokhanivskyi, the leader of the OUN volunteer battalion, was killed in action during Vovchansk battle. In Kharkiv region, military photographer Arsen Fedosenko died from injuries sustained in a missile attack. Rostyslav Livach, candidate master of sports in saber fencing, multiple prize-winner of Lviv regional championships, died in the war. Eternal memory of the Heroes...

Bodies of 254 fallen defenders were repatriated to Ukraine as a result of repatriation measures.

Total damage inflicted to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as a result of all-out Russian invasion had surged past USD 56 billion as of May 2024.

WAR: POLITICAL DECISIONS, TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGHS, ARMAMENTS, ALLIES’S AID

UKRAINIAN HOME FRONT

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine:

Earmarked UAH 2.5 billion in additional funding to get power generation and transmission infrastructure across Kharkiv region prepared for winter season.

Endorsed procedures to rebury in the National Military Memorial Cemetery the fallen Ukrainian defenders who had been buried in the currently occupied parts of Ukraine.

Amended procedures for State Border crossing by emergency and rescue service employees.

The Netherlands’ Minister of Defense, Kaisa Ollongren arrived on a visit in Ukraine.  Mrs Ollongren met and talked with Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and visited two drone factories.

The Ministry of Defense has introduced over 100 different ammunition items into operational use since the break-out of Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Some half of these were commissioned for service use in 2024.

On June 14-16, the international Black Sea Security Forum took place in Odesa, with focus on the Black Sea regional security situation.

DTEK Energo announced it would invest UAH 3.9 billion throughout 2024 to recover and rebuild the thermal power plants damaged by Russian bombardments.

Over January through April 2024, Ukraine had imported USD 21.92 billion worth of products, 7.6 per cent up year-on-year, while exports grew 0.3 per cent to USD 13.35 billion.

Ukraine has never requested international partners to help with blood and components donations since the break-out of the full-scale invasion.

Ukroboronprom, Ukraine’s state-run defense industries conglomerate, started an industrial partnership with Germany’s Rheinmetal to repair and manufacture armored vehicles. The first facility has already become operational.

International visits by the President of Ukraine

GERMANY, June 11

The President arrived in Germany to attend the Ukraine Recovery Conference and hold talks with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Zelensky held bilateral talks with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Highlights from Zelensky-Scholz joint news briefing:

Russia should realize the need to withdraw its troops from the Ukrainian territory, thus creating conditions for peace negotiations - Olaf Scholz.

Russia drops some one hundred glide bombs on Ukrainian soil every day. These numbers cannot be tackled by any single air defense system. This therefore needs complex solutions, which we were discussing in Berlin - Zelensky.

It is important not to hand over the initiative of peace to Russia, because the Russian initiative, its vision of ending the war was demonstrated on the firsat day of the invasion. Their vision is the occupation of our country - Zelenskyi.

Zelensky delivered a speech at the Bundestag’s special session.

The President visited a surface-to-air missile group of Bundeswehr’s Air Force. He said while there that Ukraine is anticipating a positive decision on the provision by Germany of two or three Patriot-class air defense systems in the near term.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced a new security aid package for Ukraine, comprised of Patriot missiles and other weapons.

SAUDI ARABIA, June 12

President Zelensky met with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Muhammad bin Salman Al Saud to discuss preparations for the Summit on Peace in Ukraine

ITALY, June 13

Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and Joe Biden of the United States of America met in Italy to sign a 10-year bilateral security agreement. The Agreement is aimed at strengthening Ukraine's ability to defend itself in the present while also deterring aggression anytime in the future.

President Zelensky and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan signed a bilateral agreement on security cooperation. Japan has committed to provide USD 4.5 billion in aid for Ukraine throughout this year.

Zelensky met with the Prime Minister Giorgia Maloni of Italy, Pope Francis, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

SWITZERLAND, June 15-16

Zelensky arrived in Switzerland to attend the Summit on Peace in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian President met and talked with US Vice President Kamala Harris, who announced over USD 1.5 billion in aid for Ukraine, targeting the energy sector, humanitarian assistance, and political defense

Zelensky met and talked with the President of Chile, Gabriel Boric Font, the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, and the President of Kenya, William Ruto.

The President met with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew; he thanked His Holiness for his support in the repatriation of Ukrainian children and the exchange of war prisoners.

President Zelensky met with the President of Argentina Javier Miley and awarded him the Order of Freedom medal.

Zelensky met with the President of the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara to discuss global food security issues.

He met with the Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen to talk over preparations for the transfer of F-16 jet fighters to Ukraine.

Zelensky and the President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis talked over the expected decisions regarding the potential endorsement by the EU of the Negotiating Framework and the start of official negotiations on Ukraine’s EU accession as early as in June.

Ukraine Peace Summit

June 15

Ukraine has been able to engage 101 countries and international organizations into participating in the Summit on Peace in Ukraine. All parts of the world and continents were represented at the gathering.

The first plenary session of the Ukraine Peace Summit took place. President of the Swiss Confederation Viola Amherd and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi delivered welcome speeches at the inaugural session.

Members of Russia’s official and opposition media outlets were present at the inaugural Peace Summit along with journalists from other countries.

Leaders' statements

President Zelensky opened his speech with the words: "Today is the day when the world is approaching a just peace."

Peace is more than the absence of war and an immediate ceasefire. Without serious negotiations , without a roadmap to a just and lasting peace, it will lead to a new frozen conflict, to a scenario that is dangerous for Ukraine, Europe, and the international community as a whole -- the Federal Chancellor of Germany.

US Vice President Kamala Harris considers Russian dictator Putin's proposals for peace in Ukraine to be an invitation to surrender rather than a sincere way to ending the war.

Croatia is ready to support talks on peace in Ukraine only if such talks do not require Kyiv to surrender and give up its territories -- Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenković.

“Putin is not interested in real peace. He has launched a sustained diplomatic campaign to boycott the summit, order countries to stay away from the summit, and fabricate false claims that he is willing to negotiate -- the British Prime Minister.

It is Ukraine that must decide if, and when, it wants to negotiate with Russia over a peace deal -- the President of the European Council Charles Michel.

June 16

Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke at the second plenary session of the Ukraine Peace Summit.

The United Nations supports all initiatives aimed at establishing a just and lasting peace in Ukraine that are based on the UN Charter, international law and relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly – Under-Secretary General

The participants in the inaugural Peace Summit in Bürgenstock agreed on a joint communiqué, which called to return the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant under full control of Ukraine, to ensure uninterrupted manufacturing and supply of food products in Ukraine, secure full access to sea ports in the Black and Azov Seas, release all prisoners of war and return all deported Ukrainian children, among other things. The document also declared any threat or use of nuclear weapons in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine inadmissible and attacks on ships and civilian ports unacceptable.

Ukraine Recovery Conference, June 11-12

The President of Ukraine spoke at the Ukraine Recovery Conference and said that the Negotiating Framework with the European Union should be endorsed and negotiations on Ukraine's EU accession get started in June.

Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, divided the long-term needs for Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction into five categories: air defense, investments, macro-financial stability support, EU membership, and use of frozen Russian assets.

Italy will soon provide Ukraine with a new military aid package, consisting mostly of air defense equipment and ammunition. Moreover, the Italian government is compiling a EUR 140 million economic aid package for Ukraine to help restore and rebuild the country's infrastructure.

The European Council supported the revision of the European Union’s budget, which will provide EUR 50 billion in macro-financial support to Ukraine, to be implemented under the Ukraine Facility program over the period from 2024 through 2027. On top of that, the European Union has signed agreements worth €1.4 billion with banks in a bid to attract private sector investment in Ukraine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said.

The United States has committed to provide $824 million in funding to bolster resilience of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Ukraine will receive 1.5 billion euros in windfall proceeds from sanctioned Russian sovereign assets as early as in July and 1.9 billion euros under the Ukraine Facility in June, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on June 11.

The Netherlands has committed to provide €138 million in funding for a range of recovery and reconstruction projects in Ukraine.

 The European Investment Bank will provide Ukraine with EUR 100 million to assist with restoration and modernization of the country’s social infrastructure.

Ukraine has secured 110 international agreements, contracts and memoranda, and agreed with partners on aid packages worth combined over EUR 16 billion.

23rd Ramstein meeting, June 13

Argentina has joined the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (otherwise known as Ramstein group).

Sweden has committed to provide EUR 6.5 billion in military aid to Ukraine over the next three years.

The Defense Ministers Rustem Umerov of Ukraine and Lloyd Austin of the USA discussed in detail the planning of Ukraine's defense needs.

Canada will send Ukraine 2,300 CRV7 missiles, armored vehicles, 900 drones, 29 x Nanuk remote control systems, and 130,000 rounds of small arms ammunition.

G7 Summit, June 13-14

The Group of Seven wealthy democracies have agreed to use windfall proceeds from frozen Russian assets to give Ukraine USD 50 billion in loans, aiming to ensure Kyiv can continue its fight against Russia’s invasion and to signal Western resolve to Moscow.

President Zelensky, in his speech at the G7 Summit, said that Ukraine needs additional Patriot systems, a transition to F-16s and a recovery plan.

At the end of the Summit, G7 leaders committed to step up measures to enforce price cap on Russian oil and reduce Moscow's profits from metal exports.

On June 15, EU ambassadors agreed “in principle” on the negotiating frameworks on the accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Jan Lipavsky, said that the initial shipment of artillery rounds purchased under the Czech ammunition initiative has already arrived in Ukraine and more will follow.

The Biden Administration will allow the Azov Brigade to use US weaponry, lifting a ban imposed years ago.

NATO defense ministers, at the end of the 23rd Ramstein Group meeting, agreed on a long-term plan to help Ukraine and train Ukrainian military personnel, but were unable to reach agreement on a new funding plan for Ukraine’s military, with some members balking at the USD 40 billion annual commitment sought by the alliance’s top official.

The United States has rolled out new sanctions against more than 300 individuals and firms it accuses of aiding Russia's war effort in Ukraine.

On June 13, Canada imposed sanctions on Russian propagandists and several defense industry enterprises.

On June 13, the United Kingdom announced it would impose 50 new sanctions, including on Russian "shadow fleet" ships, financial institutions, and military suppliers from various countries, to undermine Russia's ability to finance and equip its war machine against Ukraine.

Germany has handed over a fresh military aid package to Ukraine, which includes HIMARS systems, air defense equipment, and tanks.

The Norwegian Foreign Ministry pledged to “contribute €240 million to air defense measures for Ukraine”, as well as to transfer mortar ammunition worth about NOK 480 million (over USD 45 million).

At the end of the Summit of parliament speakers of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Ukraine, a joint declaration was released, which contains commitments to continue work on bilateral security cooperation deals and their implementation.

Commenting on the outcome of the recent EU Parliament elections, the European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola said that the European Parliament has retained the mainstream centrist-democratic majority.

The government of Lithuania has approved the transfer of 14 x M113 armored personnel carrier vehicles to the Ukrainian army, with the delivery set for the next week.

Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States released a joint statement that accuses Russia of “seeking to undermine Moldovan democratic institutions in the leadup to the October presidential elections and a referendum on Moldova’s EU membership.”

The trio of countries accused the Kremlin of supporting opposition candidates standing against President Maia Sandu and of “agitating criticism of the incumbent Moldovan president’s government and political party, in order to incite protests.”

On June 7, Polish President Andrzej Duda endorsed amendments to the special law on assistance to the Ukrainians who had found refuge in Poland following Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine.
