Head: UN General Assembly has no means of coercion against Russia
The UN General Assembly keeps insisting on the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, although it has no means of forcing Russia to do so.
This was stated by UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis in an interview with Ukrinform.
“Now, the General Assembly has passed several resolutions along those lines. It doesn't have the means to force Russia or any other country to comply. However, if you are a member of an organization established based on rules you must comply with them. We hope and use every opportunity available to us to insist to the Russians, that they withdraw from Ukraine and fulfill their obligations under the Charter. That is what needs to happen,” Dennis Francis said.
Francis emphasized that the UN expects its members to abide by the provisions of its Charter. The President of the General Assembly reminded that member states had adopted a resolution calling for the immediate and complete withdrawal of all Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine.
“One state cannot violate the law most flagrantly and expect nothing to happen. There are consequences and they must know they are in violation; therefore, they need to fix it. The sooner they fix it, the better for everyone,” Dennis Francis added.
He assured that as long as there is a war in Ukraine and Russia has troops on Ukrainian territory, the General Assembly will insist that the Russians are breaking the law and that they must take measures to bring everything in line with the law.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anton Korynevych said that Russia's disrespect for international law has no limits, as Russia ignores the order of the International Court of Justice on provisional measures, which obliges Moscow to immediately cease hostilities in Ukraine.
