Law enforcers nab militant at Donbas crossing checkpoint
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has pressed charges against a citizen of Ukraine who is believed to have been part of the “DPR” terrorist group and was earlier detained by Ukraine military as he attempted to cross in from the temporarily occupied areas in the country’s east.
That’s according to the SBU press center, Ukrinform reports.
During the pre-trial inquiry, SBU counterintelligence operatives found that the suspect had been an enemy tank crewman involved in the shelling of Ukrainian defense positions in the Donbas warzone.
According to the investigation, in 2016 the culprit had joined the ranks of an illegal armed group where he was appointed tank mechanic-driver.
Now the perpetrator claims he sought to find a job in the government-controlled territory.
The man has been charged under Art. 258-3 (participation in a terrorist group or terrorist organization) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The court has ruled to remand the suspect in custody pending inquiry.
A pre-trial investigation is underway to identify and prosecute other individuals complicit in crimes against Ukraine's state security.
