Ukrainian parliament equalizes rights of women and men in army

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted the law "On Amending Certain Laws of Ukraine on Ensuring Equal Rights and Opportunities for Women and Men when Performing Military Service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Other Military Formations."

A total of 247 MPs voted for adoption of the relevant bill No. 6109 in the second reading and on the whole, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"This law deals with the gender equality of men and women when performing the military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In general, the idea of the law is that we do not divide people into men and women. All persons enjoy the same rights when performing the active service. It’s a commitment of Ukraine and a common practice of the European Union, Israel, the United States of America. We certainly introduce this practice with respect to the laws on protection of motherhood," commented Ivan Vynnyk, the secretary of the parliamentary committee for national security and defense.
