Canadian opposition supports provision of lethal weapons to Ukraine

The Conservative Party of Canada -- the country's largest opposition party – has pledged to supply Ukraine with lethal weapons if it wins the upcoming federal election.

That's according to the party's "Canada's Recovery Plan," an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"Canada's Conservatives will renew Canada's commitment to NATO by intensifying Operation UNIFIER, Canadian Armed Forces' military training and capacity-building mission in Ukraine, supplying Ukraine with lethal weapons, and reinstating the provision of RadarSat imagery," the document reads.

The Conservatives are also promising to restore the provision of RadarSat-2 data to Ukraine.

The party said it was ready to "provide support for Ukrainian democratic reforms to increase transparency and accountability."

The snap federal election in Canada is scheduled for September 20. In the current convocation of the parliament, the Conservative Party ranks second by the number of seats.

RadarSat is a Canadian remote sensing satellite. The defence ministries of Ukraine and Canada signed an intelligence sharing agreement in early 2015, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suspended the effect of the document shortly after his appointment, citing a lack of funds and licensing problems.
