Representative of European Commission supports Ukraine’s stance on Nord Stream 2

Dominique Ristori, the Director General of the Directorate-General for Energy within the European Commission, has expressed its support for Ukraine's stance on construction of Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2.

Mr. Ristori said this during a briefing upon the meeting with Energy and Coal Industry Minister of Ukraine Ihor Nasalyk, the Government portal reports.

"Mr. Ristori has assured that he supports Ukraine's stance on the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2, which bypasses Ukraine," the statement reads.

"We believe that Nord Stream 2 does not contribute to the diversification of sources and routes of gas supplies. EU will not support it financially," Ristori said.

During the meeting with the Ukrainian minister, the European Commission representatives also discussed the progress of reforming of the energy sector, the adoption of the annual working plan for 2018, the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding of 2016, the issues of energy efficiency, climate protection and development of the renewable energy.

Minister Nasalyk thanked his European colleagues for consistent support for the reforms in Ukraine and stressed the particular importance of expanding the existing strategic energy partnership with the EU.

In turn, the Director General of the Directorate-General for Energy at the European Commission noted the significant progress in the conduct of reforms and promised further support.
