Ukraine, European Commission develop plan for radioactive waste disposal

Ukraine and the European Commission develop a national plan for the geological disposal of radioactive waste (RW).

“The Ukrainian legislation provides for the creation of a geological repository for high-level radioactive waste. Now it is the only economically viable and correct option with regard to the future generations as the geological repository will provide reliable and long-lasting isolation of RW and prevent radioactive substances from releasing into the biosphere. The problem of radioactive waste disposal is very relevant so the start of elaboration of a national action plan is a huge step forward,” First Deputy Chairman of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management Oleh Nasvit said in a commentary to Ukrinform.

The project should determine the process of selection of a site for building a repository, ensure budget planning, training of specialists as well as contribute to formation of a positive public attitude towards this facility. The plan is designed for two years and will be implemented by a consortium of companies from France, Germany and Sweden with the participation of one of the enterprises of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
