NBU to issue five million UAH 1,000 banknotes

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) is planning the first issue of five million banknotes with a face value of UAH 1,000 and a subsequent printing of these banknotes depending on the number of orders from banks and the needs of the economy, the director of the NBU's money circulation department, Viktor Zaivenko, has said.

"We are planning [to issue UAH 1,000 banknotes] in the amount of five million pieces. This is the first issue. Then it will be carried out depending on the number of orders from banks and the needs of the economy," he said at a briefing on Thursday.

Zaivenko also noted that there were currently 140 million coins with a face value of one hryvnia and nearly 124 million coins with a face value of two hryvnias. In 2018, the NBU produced 140 million UAH 1 coins and 145 million UAH 2 coins.

The UAH 1,000 banknote will be put into circulation from October 25, 2019. On the front side is a portrait of Volodymyr Vernadsky, and on the back side is a picture of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences.
