Parliament plans to renew state oversight of nuclear energy use

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted a bill on the amendments to certain laws of Ukraine on the safety of nuclear energy use at first reading.

The decision was supported by 295 MPs, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

The document suggests amending the Law of Ukraine "On the Fundamental Principles of State Oversight (Control) in the Field of Economic Activity" and the Law of Ukraine "On Licensing of Types of Economic Activity" regarding the non-application of their action to oversight of compliance with the safety requirements of nuclear energy use and licensing of activities in the field of nuclear energy use.

The authors of the bill No. 2372 emphasize that its adoption will renew the procedure for state oversight and licensing activities in the field of nuclear energy use as defined in the Law of Ukraine "On Use of Nuclear Energy and Radiation Safety" and the Law of Ukraine "On Permitting Activities in the Use of Nuclear Energy " to comply with international commitments made by Ukraine.

The bill is backed by the G7 countries that insist on Ukraine's full implementation of its international commitments regarding the oversight / control of nuclear energy use.
