Shmyhal: Ukraine has enough energy resources for heating season

Ukraine has enough energy resources to pass through the heating season of 2021-2022, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has said.

“There will be enough coal for the heating season. As to an issue of uneven supply, there is really a deficit in the world today. The world is facing an energy crisis," Shmyhal said on the Pravo na Vladu (Right to Power) talk show on 1+1 TV channel, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

The Prime Minister noted that about 10 million tonnes of coal on average are consumed during the heating season, of which 8 million tonnes are domestic coal. The government has also acquainted with the schedules for supplies of imported coal, which, according to Shmyhal, is already on its way to Ukraine.

"We currently have 17.6 billion cubic meters of gas in storage facilities, of which 1.4 billion cubic meters is gas from non-residents that can be taken away by them. However, even if there is 16 billion cubic meters of gas, this will be enough for both heating and technological needs," Shmyhal stressed.

The official said that the main electricity consumption by the end of the heating season could be covered by nuclear generation: 14 units will operate at NPPs. In addition, Ukraine has gas generation, hydro generation, and energy from renewable sources, which can be used during peak consumption.
