Ships with coal will arrive in Ukraine in Nov-Dec - Shmyhal

Seven ships with coal are expected to arrive in Ukraine in late November or early December, so there will be no problems with the heating season, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has said.

He said this at a briefing following a working trip to Ternopil region on Tuesday, November 16, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"We expect that Ukraine will have coal by the end of this month or the beginning of next month. In principle, we will reach standard parameters, but the capacity that Ukraine has now is sufficient. Our base is provided by nuclear generation that operates at a higher capacity than in the previous autumn and winter periods. Ukraine's energy system is balanced and fully supplied with electricity," Shmyhal said.

Mykhailo Volynets, head of the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Ukraine, said earlier that coal stocks at the country's thermal power plants currently amounted to 49.84%, or 378,000 tons, of the planned guaranteed volume.

About 1.9 million tonnes of coal are to be delivered to thermal power plants in November, including 1.4 million tonnes of Ukrainian coal and 500,000 tonnes imported from Poland, the United States, and Kazakhstan.
