Parliament approves law on activities of Bureau of Economic Security

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted the Law "On Amendments to the Administrative and Criminal Legislation Concerning the Implementation of the Activities of the Bureau of Economic Security of Ukraine" (No.3959-1).

Some 296 MPs voted in favor of the relevant document, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

“The draft law defines the legal basis for the creation and implementation of certain tasks of an independent state law enforcement body, which will perform the functions of analytical assessment, prevention, detection, termination, investigation and detection of criminal offenses under its jurisdiction," reads an explanatory note to the law.

In particular, the Code on Administrative Violations defines the liability of employees of the Bureau of Economic Security of Ukraine, who have special ranks, for administrative offenses under disciplinary statutes.

In addition, there is administrative liability for illegal use of the name and signs of belonging to the Bureau of Economic Security.

The Criminal Code introduces liability for value added tax fraud as a separate type of criminal offense, the investigation of which is within the competence of the Bureau of Economic Security, etc.

As expected, a comprehensive result of the adoption of the law will be a functional opportunity to exercise certain powers for pre-trial investigation into criminal offenses by detectives of the Bureau of Economic Security after its creation and start of operation.
