Food reserves created in Ukraine to immediately provide aid within liberated areas

Each regional administration, whose territories were temporarily seized by Russian troops, has created food reserves to provide local residents with food supplies as soon as such areas are liberated.

The relevant statement was made by the Ukrainian Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“Today, basic food packages and food reserves have been created at each regional military administration, whose territories are temporarily under [Russian] occupation, in order to provide local residents with food supplies as soon as such areas are liberated. This refers to Kherson Region, Zaporizhzhia Region, Donetsk Region, Luhansk Region and Kharkiv Region,” the report states.

According to the ministry, since early March 2022, public funds have been used to purchase domestically-produced food products included on the critical consumption list and deliver them to individuals.

“Products were purchased via local military administrations and used actually for two purposes: to be distributed among internally displaced persons all over Ukraine and to create reserves in case of potential force majeure events or the blockade of one region or another,” Ukrainian Agrarian Policy and Food First Deputy Minister Taras Vysotskyi noted.

Basic food packages consist of 12.5 kilograms of long-term food products, such as cereals, vegetable oil, canned food, dairy and meat products, potatoes, rusks and biscuits.

In addition, a plan for ensuring food security under martial law has been endorsed in Ukraine. This plan includes monitoring for the status of food security and agricultural infrastructure as a whole; providing support for food producers; providing targeted aid to vulnerable social groups; centralized control over food prices.
