UN ready to act as mediator in demilitarization of Zaporizhzhia NPP - Guterres
The United Nations stands ready to offer its good offices as a mediator in the demilitarization of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said this at a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Wednesday, March 8, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.
"Safety and security around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is also vital. I believe that a possible mediation to seek the full demilitarization of the area, while ensuring that the plant can return to normal operations, would also be important. The United Nations stands ready to offer its good offices," Guterres said.
Russian troops captured the ZNPP early on March 4. The invaders placed military equipment and ammunition at the station. They are constantly shelling the surrounding area and the station itself, destroying power lines and causing external power outages. About 500 Russian invaders stay at the plant.
