Energy ministry: 1.6GW of capacity added to power grid following repairs

Following the maintenance campaign and preparations for the heating season, power engineers have added 1.6 gigawatts of capacity to Ukraine’s energy system.

The relevant statement was made by the Ukrainian Energy Ministry, referring to a speech by Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko at a meeting with G7+ ambassadors, an Ukrinform correspondent

“A major repair campaign in the energy sector has already added 1.6 GW to the grid. This figure has been achieved through the modernization of thermal and hydroelectric generating units. Another 100 MW will be added in the near future,” the report states.

Galushchenko mentioned that, following Russia’s massive attacks on energy infrastructure, some objects were destroyed and cannot be repaired. Ukraine has lost about 50% of the generating capacity, which used to be available before the Russian full-scale aggression.

In particular, 44% of nuclear capacity was lost, as well as 60% of thermal capacity, over 70% of wind capacity and about 20% of solar capacity.

The Ukrainian minister emphasized that Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia NPP, is still remaining under Russian occupation.

A reminder that DTEK Group has repaired 17 thermal power units since early 2023.
