Latvian government allocates €15.6 million to support Ukrainians

The Latvian government has allocated EUR 15,617,075 to cover the costs incurred by the municipal authorities of Latvia in connection with the reception and support of refugees from Ukraine until the summer of 2024.

According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the national broadcaster LSM with reference to the Ministry of Environment and Regional Development (VARAM).

According to the order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia, the following types of costs are to be covered: accommodation and food (as part of primary care); social support; education; support for applications for management services; and the activities of the coordination points for combined state and municipal assistance for the period until June 2024.

VARAM will use this amount (and no more) to reimburse Latvian self-governments for the relevant costs once a month. Earlier, the Ministry of Regional Development, in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry of Finance, has already transferred EUR 28,551,627.50 to local governments for January-November 2023.

As Ukrinform reported, as of November, Latvia has sheltered more than 50,000 Ukrainians, including about 20,000 children studying in the country.
