Ukrhydroenergo preparing lawsuit with international arbitration over destruction of Kakhovka HPP

Ukrhydroenergo PrJSC is planning to file a lawsuit with the International Court of Arbitration against Russia with a demand for compensation for the damages caused by the destruction of Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP).

The relevant statement was made by Ukrhydroenergo PrJSC CEO Ihor Syrota, an Ukrinform correspondent reports, referring to the company’s press service.

“Recently, we have sent a notification to Russia that we are applying to the International Court of Arbitration and will be filing a lawsuit over lost profits and the plant’s construction and restoration cost. We will demand that the aggressor state compensate for the losses. According to the preliminary estimates, it is about USD 2.5 billion,” Syrota noted.

In his words, filing such a lawsuit is a long judicial procedure.

Additionally, Ukrhydroenergo has already filed a lawsuit with the European Court of Human Rights against Russia to receive compensation for the damages caused by Russia’s unprovoked armed aggression against Ukraine. This lawsuit is related not only to Russia’s blowing up of Kakhovka HPP, but also an unfinished wind farm construction project on Snake [Zmiinyi] Island. The total amount of damages under the lawsuit is UAH 17 billion.

“Unfortunately, we did not receive an adequate response from the global community to the terrorist attack committed by Russians. Ukrhydroenergo has repeatedly called in public and continues to draw the attention of the international community to the need to take quick and decisive actions aimed at preventing the new man-made disasters at critical infrastructure facilities. However, the reaction of the world is insufficient,” Syrota concluded.

A reminder that Russian invaders blew up the Kakhovka HPP dam on June 6, 2023. Four regions of Ukraine were affected, such as Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Mykolaiv. A total of 1.5 million people were left without water supply services.

As estimated by the Ukrainian Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Ministry, the total amount of losses caused by Russia’s blowing up of the Kakhovka HPP exceeded UAH 146 billion.
