Expert: 1.5 million builders needed to rebuild Ukraine in 5-10 years

Through its genocidal war, Russia has already destroyed more than 60 million square meters of housing in Ukraine.

Before the war, there were 300,000 builders in Ukraine, Ivan Perehinets, director of the Scientific and Technical Center of the Academy of Construction of Ukraine, reminded Ukrainian Radio.

"If we want to rebuild everything after the war in 5-10 years, we will need 1.3-1.5 million builders," the expert estimated.

He also emphasized the advantages of individual housing over high-rise buildings: "Over the past ten years, approximately 10 million square meters of housing have been built, of which 5-6 million are individual buildings and 4-5 million are multi-storey buildings. People should not live in twenty-story buildings."

The expert added that the social and humanitarian component of the rehabilitation of the military who will come from the front and join the construction industry is a very relevant topic. He emphasized that this should be a state policy and the implementation of specific projects within the framework of such a policy.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, Ukraine will receive EUR 100 million from the Council of Europe Development Bank (EBRD) to compensate for housing destroyed as a result of Russia's armed aggression under the NOME Compensation for Destroyed Housing project. The relevant agreement was signed by the Minister of Finance of Ukraine Sergii Marchenko and the Head of the Council of Europe Development Bank Carlo Monticelli on June 11 on the sidelines of the International Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine (URC2024).
