Body of Ukrainian who illegally crossed border found in Romania mountains
In Romania, near the border with Ukraine, the bodies of two men were found: one in the mountains, the other in the Tysa River.
This was reported by the State Border Guard Service, Ukrinform saw.
According to the State Border Guard Service, a Ukrainian who illegally crossed the border died in the mountains on Romanian territory.
"His body was found by Romanian rescuers 200 meters from the border, he had IDs on him, which indicated that he was a citizen of Ukraine born in 1995," the report says.
According to the Romanian side, the man, together with two other people, illegally crossed the border in one of the mountainous areas in Ivano-Frankivsk region. He likely died from high pressure and hypothermia, but the exact cause of death will be determined by coroners.
His companions turned to the Romanian rescue services for help.
Mountain rescuers with SPJ Salvamont Maramures note that the operation was complicated due to a thick layer of snow (up to half a meter), fog, freezing temperature down to -11 degrees Celcius, and challenging terrain. Two groups were involved in the search and rescue operation. Due to adverse weather, aviation could not be involved. In total, the operation lasted about 22 hours.
In addition, border guards from the Mukachevo Detachment were informed that their Romanian colleagues found the body in the Tysa River in the area of the settlement of Cîmpulung-la-Tisa (Romania), opposite the settlement of Hrushove. The body is yet to be identified.
As reported, since martial law was introduced in Ukraine, about 50 men have died while illegally crossing the border.
