Duda: Nord Stream 2 poses danger to Ukraine and Slovakia
The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project poses danger to Ukraine, Slovakia and Poland, that’s why Warsaw is trying to prevent its implementation.
“No doubt, implementation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project poses danger to Ukraine, Slovakia and would also pose an energy danger to Poland if we did not take our preventive measures,” Polish President Andrzej Duda said in an interview with the Polskie Radio.
According to him, the stance of Poland, Ukraine and Slovakia on this issue is unambiguous, the presidents have voiced it very clearly and nothing has changed in this context.
Nord Stream 2 is a gas pipeline project which aims to carry more Russian natural gas under the Baltic Sea direct to Germany, bypassing Ukraine and Poland. Russian gas monopoly Gazprom owns 51% of the project’s shares. Russia wants to build two strings of the gas pipeline. The project opponents, including Poland, the Baltic countries, Ukraine, Moldova, the United States and Denmark, argue that Nord Stream 2 will increase the EU's dependence on Gazprom.
