Italy supports Ukraine's European aspirations – FM Di Maio
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic Luigi Di Maio has said that Italy supports Ukraine's European aspirations.
He said this after talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba in Kyiv on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
"I want to make it clear that Italy recognizes Ukraine's European aspirations and will fully support it on this path," Di Maio said.
He noted that Italy's actions are constantly aimed at maintaining due attention to Ukraine among the international community. As an example, he cited the support of the G7 countries, which includes Italy, for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.
The Italian foreign minister also drew attention to the importance of strengthening Kyiv's relations with the European Union.
“I am sure that strengthening relations between Brussels and Kyiv is very important for both parties. Therefore, we are proud to have supported the signing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and Free Trade Agreement,” Di Maio emphasized, adding that Italy is satisfied with the results provided by the Association Agreement.
He stressed that Italy welcomes Ukraine's reforms and cooperation with the EU, and assured that they "stay by Kyiv’s side" for further reforms under the above-mentioned Agreement.
The minister paid special attention to Ukraine's partnership with NATO.
"We support and appreciate the partnership that Ukraine has reached with NATO, because it is the driving force that should increase the internal strength and defense capabilities of our country," he added.
Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio is on an official visit to Ukraine on June 10.
