Shmyhal: Dual citizenship should be introduced, it’s a sign of civilized countries
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal believes that the introduction of dual citizenship in Ukraine will strengthen the state.
“I will tell you my personal opinion. Dual citizenship is a sign of civilized countries. Dual citizenship is the norm in many civilized countries... My position is that dual citizenship should be definitely introduced. It will strengthen us,” the Prime Minister said at a press conference, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
At the same time, he stressed that dual citizenship with the aggressor state, the Russian Federation, was unacceptable, and the bill on dual citizenship had the relevant provision.
As the PM noted, millions of people of Ukrainian origin live abroad and many of them would like to have a Ukrainian passport. “Why not? Why can’t a Canadian citizen have Ukrainian citizenship if it is transparent and legal? That’s fine. These people would be able to support the country, participate in public life, attract investment, and possibly return to Ukraine. That would be a great advantage,” the Prime Minister believes.
He reminded that the Verkhovna Rada had several legislative initiatives on dual citizenship, which are currently being examined in the committees. Shmyhal expressed hope that the Parliament would consider them.
As reported, in February 2021, the National Security and Defense Council instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to settle the issue of dual citizenship in Ukraine.
