Zelensky meets with Steinmeier
On October 6, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met with German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and thanked for the support provided to Ukraine at the highest level.
“Met with Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Kyiv. It is very important that in the days of the 80th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy, the Federal President of Germany visits Ukraine and Germany supports Ukraine at the highest level,” Zelensky posted on Twitter, Ukrinform reports.
As the press service of the Head of State informed, Zelensky thanked Steinmeier for the visit and stressed that Germany was an important partner of Ukraine in Europe.
"I want to thank you for this visit, it is very important for us. We had many different meetings with you, but the most important thing is that on such important days for Ukraine, for the history of our state, on the 80th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy, Germany supports Ukraine at the highest level," the Ukrainian leader said.
The President noted that Ukraine sought to strengthen bilateral relations with Germany.
"Ukraine expects that a coalition will be formed as a result of the parliamentary elections in Germany, which will contribute to Ukrainian-German relations and support the European perspective for our country," he said.
During the talks, special attention was paid to the issue of a peaceful settlement in Donbas. Zelensky stressed that Ukraine was trying to intensify the work of all negotiation formats in order to achieve peace in the east and restore sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"We look forward to further effective support from Germany. We very much appreciate Berlin's mediation efforts within the Normandy format," he stressed.
The President of Ukraine pointed out the important role of Germany in the activities of the Crimea Platform.
"We are grateful to Germany for participating in the summit and joining its final declaration," he said.
The leaders also discussed the energy security issues of Ukraine and Europe.
"The launch of Nord Stream 2 means a significant escalation of threats to Ukraine and Europe. It is important for Ukraine to get a clear international legal mechanism that will guarantee security," Zelensky stressed.
The leaders also discussed support for Ukraine's European and Euro-Atlantic integration. The President of Ukraine drew the attention of his German counterpart to Ukraine’s expectations in the context of further integration with the EU and NATO and expressed hope for support from Germany.
