MFA: Ukraine hopes UN will join Crimea Platform
Ukraine expects UN leadership to take a more active approach towards countering Russia's ongoing military aggression.
“To protect the norms and principles of international law, on August 23, 2021, Ukraine together with 46 countries and international and regional organizations created the Crimea Platform – a new international format aimed at de-occupying Crimea and combating Russia’s hybrid aggression. We expect the UN leadership to take a more active and constructive approach towards countering the ongoing military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
Given the role of the UN in the de-occupation of Crimea, in particular in the context of UN General Assembly’s adopted resolutions on Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the militarization of Crimea, and the protection of human rights in Crimea, Ukraine hopes that the UN will join the Crimea Platform,” reads the statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine released on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the United Nations on October 24.
The Foreign Ministry notes that it is extremely important to implement efforts to reform and improve the UN, strengthen and adapt it to present-day requirements. In turn, Ukraine is ready to continue to contribute to the success of this important mission.
According to the statement, UN organizations, in particular, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), continue to play an important role in supporting the socio-economic reforms in Ukraine, achieving the goals of sustainable development, ensuring the protection of human rights and the rule of law.
"One of the most successful examples of our cooperation is overcoming the humanitarian consequences of Russian aggression. We are ready for further cooperation in this area to meet the needs of the affected civilian population along the line of contact and in the temporarily occupied territories," the Foreign Ministry informs.
The Ministry points out that the urgent area of activity of the UN in Ukraine is the support for restoration and peacebuilding processes in Donetsk and Luhansk regions to ensure the peaceful and safe reintegration of the temporarily occupied territories and their inhabitants, restore sustainable peace, and avoid occupation in the future.
United Nations Day, on October 24, marks the anniversary of the day in 1945 when the UN Charter entered into force. Ukraine was among the 51 founding member countries of the United Nations.
