Ukraine will not close its airspace – NSDC

Ukraine is not planning to close its airspace to airlines as there are no grounds for this, Secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov has said.

He said this at a briefing on Monday, February 14, following a closed meeting of the National Security and Defense Council with the participation of the Verkhovna Rada leadership, representatives of parliamentary factions and groups and the heads of concerned parliamentary committees.

"As far as the planes are concerned, let's immediately dot the i's and cross the t's. We are not closing our sky and we are not going to close it today, and there are no grounds for that. This is the first thing. As for some companies that lease aircraft and take precautions today, this is primarily due to the Netherlands. You remember when the Russian Federation shot down MH17 in the Donetsk region, so they play it safe today. I emphasize once again that we will not close [the airspace]," Danilov said.

He recalled that the Cabinet of Ministers at a meeting on February 13 allocated additional funds for the reinsurance of companies in the event of unforeseen situations.
