Canada prepares new package of sanctions against Russia - foreign minister

Canada has already developed a set of "compounded" sanction packages against Russia, which will be triggered immediately in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to Ukrinform, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said this in an interview with National Post.

"Our sanctions package is ready. We've worked with the U.S., we've worked with the UK, we've worked with Australia as well and we've been sharing information with the EU," Joly said.

She stressed that Canada has multiple sanctions packages containing a "vast array" of increasingly strong measures targeting Russian "people and entities" ready to go on "day one" if Russia invades Ukraine.

Jolie declined to detail what the sanctions packages contained but confirmed the tool box included "Magnitsky-like" sanctions, which involve the seizing of assets and travel bans on specific individuals.

At the same time, she insisted that there is still a "route to diplomacy" to settle the current crisis.
