Issue of Ukraine's neutral status should be put to referendum – Arakhamia

The issue of constitutional amendments on Ukraine's non-aligned, neutral status should be put to an all-Ukrainian referendum.

"If such an agreement is signed, when we finalize it, when we fully understand that Ukraine is protected as much as possible... the next task will be to make constitutional amendments on non-aligned, neutral status. In order to do this, we want to hold a referendum, that is, it will be decided by the Ukrainian people, not politicians," head of the Ukrainian delegation, leader of the Servant of the People parliamentary faction Davyd Arakhamia said on the air of the nationwide telethon on April 2, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

According to the MP, the issue of the referendum is an important point in the context of signing a peace agreement. In particular, at the beginning of the talks, the Russian side actively opposed it but later agreed that there was no other way.

Asked what will happen if the Ukrainian people do not support the neutral status of Ukraine, Arakhamiya said: "Then it will mean that the agreement does not have legal force. Perhaps, then we will either resume war or resume negotiations and solve the issue in some other way."

As reported, a face-to-face round of talks between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations took place in Istanbul on March 29. The Ukrainian side put forward a number of proposals to end the war, including the signing of an international agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine.
