Questionnaire is just a formal step on Ukraine’s path towards EU, Zelensky believes
Ukraine believes that it will receive a positive opinion on the questionnaire needed to acquire the status of a candidate country for EU accession in the coming weeks.
"One of the stages of our country's accession to the European Union. To the aspiration that our people are striving for and fighting for … We believe that we will receive support and become a candidate for accession, and then the final stage will begin. We very much believe that this procedure will take place in the coming weeks and we very much believe that it will be very positive, first of all, for the history of our people and the price our people have paid on the path to independence and democracy," President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said during the submission of the first part of the questionnaire to Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Matti Maasikas, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
As Zelensky noted, this is only a formal step on Ukraine’s path towards the European Union because every Ukrainian has been mentally in Europe for a long time.
"However, every country worked its way. Unfortunately, today we are working it in such a tragic period and indeed many people with a European mentality lose their lives – the most precious thing," the President added.
According to Zelensky, the Ukrainian people share a common goal – to become part of the European Union.
Zelensky also thanked Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Matti Maasikas, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Council Charles Michel, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell for supporting Ukraine and accelerating the procedure for granting Ukraine the EU candidate country status.
On April 8, during a visit to Kyiv, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen officially presented President Zelensky with a questionnaire, the completion of which is a necessary step to grant Ukraine the EU candidate country status.
On April 18, Zelensky handed over the first part of the completed questionnaire to Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Matti Maasikas.
