European Commission to publish opinion on granting Ukraine candidate status by late June
The European Commission will publish an opinion granting Ukraine the EU candidate status by the end of June, and then it will be put on the agenda of the European Council.
The relevant statement was made by European Council President Charles Michel during a joint briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“We will have the opinion of the Commission by the end of June. Then it will be my responsibility to assess when I can put this point on the agenda of the European Council and the Council, to make sure that we have the political discussion to make progress on this,” Michel told.
According to Michel, he feels a very strong support for Ukraine’s choice.
“And I am convinced that what you are demonstrating day to day, this demonstration that you are totally committed to democratic principles, to freedoms, and that you don't only fight for the future of the children of Ukraine, we know that you fight for the European fundamental principles and values,” Michel noted.
A reminder that, on April 18, 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky handed over a completed questionnaire for obtaining the EU candidate country status to Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Matti Maasikas.
