Spain’s Prime Minister vows to support Ukraine on path towards EU membership
Spain is positive about the enlargement of the European Union and is ready to support Ukraine on the path of its transformation for the sake of EU membership.
Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez made a corresponding statement at a briefing after a joint meeting with Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen and President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
The Head of Government noted that Spain had not been among the EU founding members and had joined the European community in the 1980s.
"This means that we are always in favor of enlargement, we are positive about the new members who join us in the European Union. Our philosophy is that it’s our joint project," Sánchez said.
A country's accession to the EU is a process of transformation and adaptation, he noted.
"I told President Zelensky that we would always support Ukraine on this path, and the result of this process of transformation will be exactly as you expect. I am sure of this," said the Prime Minister of Spain.
As reported, on April 18, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky handed the completed questionnaire to acquire the status of a candidate country for EU accession over to Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Matti Maasikas. This questionnaire was given to the Ukrainian side personally by President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Kyiv on April 8.
