Zelensky, Guterres discuss evacuation of civilians from Azovstal plant
In a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky asked for his assistance with the evacuation of the wounded from the Mariupol-based Azovstal plant.
The relevant statement was made by the Office of the President of Ukraine, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
Zelensky and Guterres discussed the first stage of the evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal plant and further evacuation efforts.
Zelensky informed Guterres about the successful completion of the first stage, during which 121 civilians were evacuated from the Azovstal plant, and expressed hope for a successful continuation of evacuation efforts.
The President of Ukraine personally thanked the UN Secretary-General for his efforts to evacuate Ukrainian civilians from the Azovstal plant. Zelensky also appealed to Guterres to assist in the evacuation of all the wounded from the Azovstal plant.
“The lives of the people who are remaining there are in danger. Everyone is important to us. We ask for your help in saving them,” Zelensky stressed.
In addition, Zelensky expressed gratitude to the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross, which demonstrated the possibility of making progress amid the most difficult humanitarian crises.
