US, France, Germany, Italy, UK agree on additional sanctions against Russia

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and her counterparts from France, Germany, Italy and Britain met in Paris to discuss further steps to impose additional sanctions on Russia and continue to support Ukraine.

The U.S. Department of State said this in a statement following Sherman's meeting with French MFA Secretary General François Delattre, German MFA State Secretary Andreas Michaelis, Italian MFA Secretary General Ettore Sequi, and UK Minister of State for Europe and North America James Cleverly, Ukrinform reports.

"The participants coordinated on plans for additional sanctions and other measures to hold the Russian Federation accountable," the statement said.

In addition, the parties had "a wide-ranging discussion on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the importance of continuing to provide military assistance to Ukraine to defend itself, as well as humanitarian aid to the millions who have been forced to flee their homes."

The parties also discussed the threat to global food security caused by Russia's invasion.

The G7 leaders are planning to hold a virtual meeting on Sunday, May 8, to discuss new sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
