Sixth sanctions package against Russia may be considered before next Monday – Borrell
The European Union continues discussing the sixth package of sanctions against Russia at the level of the Permanent Representatives of the Member States, and this issue may be considered before next Monday.
The relevant statement was made by EU High Representative Josep Borrell at a press conference after Brussels VI Conference on supporting the future of Syria and the region, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“[On the 6th package of sanctions] We continue discussing, at the level of the Permanent Representatives of the Member States, in order to get an agreement, that could be adopted by the Foreign Affairs Council – which is the body that has a decision capacity on sanctions. We continue working on that, there are still some difficulties pending. I hope that before the next meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council – which is going to take place next Monday – these difficulties will be raised. And otherwise, we will have to raise the level of discussions to the level of [Foreign] Ministers at the Foreign Affairs Council,” Borrell told.
A reminder that, on February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, starting a war.
The European Union expressed solidarity with Ukraine and started to provide effective political, economical, financial, humanitarian and military assistance to Ukraine. Five packages of economic and individual sanctions against Russia have already been introduced. The sixth package of sanctions is expected to affect the import of Russian energy resources.
