Heads of government of Germany, Portugal, Spain discuss support for Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz discussed support for Ukraine with Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez and Prime Minister of Portugal António Costa at a meeting on Friday.
"Their discussion was focused on the current security situation in Europe in view of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. The three leaders confirmed their full support for Ukraine as long as it is necessary," German Federal Government Spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit said.
In addition, the three leaders discussed some issues on the agenda of the European Council meeting scheduled for next week. These issues, according to Hebestreit, also relate to the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, namely energy and economic issues, as well as climate change.
The heads of government agreed on the importance of urgent joint European responses to the challenges associated with high energy prices, the spokesperson noted.
Scholz, Costa, and Sánchez emphasized the importance of diversifying energy sources to ensure the security of supplies in Europe. In this context, they emphasized the importance of accelerating the construction of interconnectors within the EU, including gas infrastructure capable of using clean hydrogen, and agreed to work on this issue together.
As a reminder, the meeting of the European Council will take place on October 20-21 in Brussels.
