Sullivan: Whatever Russia says about negotiations, it acts not in favor of peace

Russia's actions, in particular the annexation of Ukraine’s territories, do not look like steps in favor of a just and lasting peace, no matter what Moscow says about the negotiations.

"All of Russia's proposals begin with the fact that Russia will keep the territories it seized by force in Ukraine. You don't need to hear from me what is unacceptable. This is unacceptable according to the UN Charter, which does not allow the seizure of the territories of other countries by force, which does not allow the flagrant violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity that took place," United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said at a joint briefing with Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak in Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"This war can end very easily: Russia decided to start it, it can decide to end it by stopping its attack on Ukraine, by stopping the occupation of Ukraine. This is exactly what it must do from our point of view," Sullivan added.

As the advisor to the U.S. President noted, the essential question is what a just peace in Ukraine looks like and how to achieve it. "If you look at Russian statements and actions, including the actions that they, I quote, annexed the territory of a neighbor, it does not look like anything in favor of peace, no matter what they say about the negotiations," Sullivan said.

According to him, the USA considers is that a conversation with the international community is needed, with the support of Ukraine, about the conditions for a just and lasting peace for Ukraine and the international community.

As reported, on November 2, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned Western leaders against trying to push Ukraine to sign a peace agreement with Russia on unfavorable terms.

On September 30, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine was ready for dialogue with the Russian Federation but with another leader.
