Zelensky, EU leaders discuss defense support for Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has discussed defense support for Ukraine with leaders of the EU member states and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The relevant statement was made by the Office of the President of Ukraine, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“After negotiations with the President of France and the Chancellor of Germany the day before, the Head of State met with all other leaders present at the EU summit,” the report states.
In particular, President Zelensky told his colleagues about the situation on the battlefield and Ukraine’s defense needs, including fighter jets, armored vehicles, artillery and air defense.
The President of Ukraine emphasized that the timely provision of the necessary equipment in the right amount would help restore a just peace as soon as possible and protect the interests and values of Europe.
The parties discussed the possibility of switching the EU’s military industry to an enhanced mode of operation.
Additionally, Zelensky called for the elimination of gaps in the sanctions policy against Russia and speeding up the creation of an effective compensation mechanism.
The President of Ukraine also discussed with partners concrete steps to implement the Peace Formula and called for a decision to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU as soon as this year.
A reminder that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is paying a visit to Brussels on Thursday.
