Kuleba: Many countries and institutions to impose new sanctions on Russia to mark invasion anniversary
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba announced a series of measures against Russia on the anniversary of the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
"At the UN, in Kyiv, in many other capitals of the world, various events will take place that will send a very clear signal to President Putin: if you, Putin, are playing a game of attrition and think that time is on your side, then you are badly mistaken. Because unity with Ukraine grows every day, and you will definitely lose in this war," Kuleba said during the nationwide news telethon, Ukrinform reports with reference to Radio Liberty.
In this context, he pointed to U.S. President Joe Biden's plans to visit Poland on February 20-22: "Of course, this is also a component of commemorating this tragic anniversary and a component of the signal to Putin that I mentioned. Therefore, it is very important that President Biden will be in Europe. All the more so in Poland, a country that plays an extremely important role in ensuring a second armed front for Ukraine."
Kuleba also commented on the possibility of strengthening sanctions against Russia and expelling it from the UN Security Council.
"New sanctions will be announced to mark [the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on] February 24. They will be announced by different countries, different institutions. This will also be part of this signal of unity for victory. As for the UN and Russia in the Security Council, we embarked on this path with our statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which was made public at the end of last year. This path will not be quick... Because it is about rebooting what is essentially a global institution. But we have a clear plan," the minister said.
He added that Kyiv's primary goal is to "delegitimize Russia's presence in the UN Security Council."
"That is, everyone will understand that fraudsters who fraudulently usurped this place are sitting in front of them. This result will be achieved quite quickly. But the expulsion itself will definitely take some time. And for this, a number of factors must coincide. But believe me, the achievement of the first goal, delegitimization which I mentioned, will be a terrible international blow to Russia," Kuleba summed up.
