EP’s Foreign Affairs Committee to ask to start Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations this year
The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament considers it possible and intends to raise the issue of starting negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU already this year, provided that the country fulfills the necessary conditions.
“This is not only a war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. This is a brutal attack against European entire peace and security architecture. And that is why it is important for us to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine to support the country, to continue our support, to increase our support economically, financially, humanitarian wise and also militarily,” David McAllister, Chair of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, said at the press seminar “One year of war against Ukraine” at the European Parliament, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
In this regard, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee announced his intention to ask to start Ukraine's EU accession negotiations already this year.
“The European Parliament has supported all the activities of the member states and the Commission in supporting Ukraine. Perhaps we have even the driving force on some matters… We strongly believe in the European Parliament in the European perspective of Ukraine. That is why we would ask for the Commission and member states if conditions are met to start the accession negotiations already in this year,” McAllister added.
As reported, on February 2, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the European Union to work towards starting Ukraine's EU accession negotiations.
