Melnyk, Nichols discuss deepening ties with Latin America, Caribbean

Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Andrii Melnyk and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Ambassador Brian Nichols have discussed enhancing partnership with Latin America and the Caribbean.

The relevant talks took place at the instruction of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, an Ukrinform correspondent reports, referring to the Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Ministry.

In the course of the online meeting, Melnyk expressed gratitude to the U.S. Administration for the tremendous military, financial and humanitarian assistance provided to Ukraine and aiming at stopping Russian armed aggression and liberating all the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. In his words, this unprecedented support from American allies will go down in history.

The main purpose of the meeting was to elaborate common approaches to the cooperation of Ukraine and the United States in order to intensify ties with Latin America nations and the Caribbean.

The parties exchanged opinions on the potential areas of cooperation aiming at strengthening dialogue between both countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, in particular, within the context of counteracting the Russian aggression.

Melnyk briefed Nichols on the new approaches of Ukraine’s foreign policy in the Latin American region, and the willingness of the Ukrainian President to reset Ukraine’s relations with this strategically important region.

Nichols assured the Ukrainian side that Washington, as Ukraine’s key ally, would be ready to provide practical assistance in developing contacts between Ukraine and Latin America.

The parties agreed to continue maintaining communication on a regular basis. Melnyk also invited Nichols to pay a working visit to Kyiv.
