Stefanchuk, Metsola discuss Ukraine's movement towards EU
Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk discussed with President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola Ukraine's movement towards the European Union.
"The European Parliament is at the forefront of support for Ukraine and was the first among European institutions to seek Ukraine's EU candidate status. Most of the conversation [with the European Parliament President] was devoted to the movement of Ukraine towards the EU," Stefanchuk posted on Facebook.
The Verkhovna Rada Chairman emphasized that despite the full-scale war, Ukraine has done a great deal of work on the implementation of the seven steps defined by the European Commission for the start of negotiations on the country's membership in the European Union. He emphasized that it should be evaluated properly.
"We are united by a common position: the start of negotiations on EU membership should begin this year," Stefanchuk concluded.
As reported, on February 28, 2022, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed Ukraine's application for membership in the European Union. On June 23, the heads of state and government of the European Union adopted a decision to grant Ukraine the EU candidate status.
On March 4, 2023, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola expressed hope that negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the European Union will begin this year.
